Okay, so I got curious the other day wondering why different gems have the same colours but different compositions and values. I used a website which I referred to a lot back in university: https://geology.com/ . I also saw a Ted-Ed video on Youtube which goes into very basic crystal formation in terms of atoms and chemical bonds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgSRAsgrKmg
I have also found a podcast on Spotify called “It’s Sedimentary, My Dear: A Geology Podcast” which is a good listen while doing the chores.
Oh, and a fellow club member pointed me in the direction of an app called “Australian Geology Travels”, by Trilobite Solutions. If you want to know where all the old mines are, some fossicking areas, or admire the splattered rainbow of geological maps while you’re in line for a Covid test, then I highly recommend.
And of course, there are lists and blogs already on our website shared by our members, check them out here, gems, minerals & rocks here.
What other resources – websites, Youtube channels, magazines – do you use, follow and enjoy?
